The fastest, most-effective, fat-burning workouts you've ever done

While it may seem like the strategic plan for some seedy film company, it's the mantra that is the key to making the Abs Diet workouts work so well. The best form of cardiovascular exercise for fat-burning comes in the form of interval training--that is, short periods of very intense exercise alternating with short periods of rest. That regimen increases your calorie-burning process not only during the exercise, but for hours afterwards. Now, you can do interval training in many different ways--on a track, in a pool, on a bike. But one of the coolest places you can do an interval workout is on the neighborhood or gym basketball court. See, basketball players are the epitome of interval specialists--they run hard, then jog or walk. So the court itself serves as a great backdrop for combining bursts of speed with periods of rest. Change up your typical interval workout with one of these court-focused, basketball-inspired workouts. No ball necessary

Change up your typical interval workout with one of these court-focused, basketball-inspired workouts

Today's NBA players have to run the equivalent of eight marathons over 82 games each season. That's not including the postseason, practices, or preseason wind sprints. No wonder Allen Iverson reportedly was able to run a mile in just over 4 minutes during the 2004 Olympics—with his court clothes on.



According to Erik Helland, C.S.C.S., the head strength and conditioning coach for the Chicago Bulls, it's not endurance that separates good from great players in the NBA—everyone has stamina by midseason. What's important is taking what's left in your tank and harnessing it for explosive bursts of speed, the kind that enables Kirk Hinrich, the Bulls' point guard and floor general, to chase down a loose ball or step into the passing lane for the steal.



The following drills come from Helland and Heat trainer Foran, who helped Shaq costar Udonis Haslem develop long-lasting, explosive speed on the court.



The Drill: Tempo Runs

Split a 400-meter run into four 100-meter bursts. Run each in 16 seconds (sprinters clock in at under 10 seconds), resting 10 seconds after each segment. Repeat the drill five times for a total of 2,000 meters.



The Drill: Fours

Run four lengths of the court, baseline to baseline. "Run as hard as you can with the goal of completing it in under 22 seconds, Foran says. Rest 40 seconds and repeat 8 to 12 times.



The Drill: Seventeens

Run sideline to sideline, 17 times. Changing direction adds difficulty. Run each set in a minute, then rest for 2 minutes. Aim for four or five runs total.



The Drill: Basic Suicides

Shuttle back and forth between one baseline and all of the other lines on the court. Start with the free throw line, double back to the baseline, and then run to the midcourt line, and so on. Foran has his players aim for 33 seconds in total. Rest for a minute, and repeat six to eight times.
