Is France ready for a woman President?
French Socialist presidential candidate Segolene Royal beat male rivals in a ballot of party members, securing 60% of the vote.
Recent polls have also shown she is the only candidate capable of beating right-wing Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy in the presidential race in April.
She has shocked fellow Socialists in past months with tough plans to cut crime and by questioning the party's key 35-hour working week policy.
Will Segolene Royal become France’s first female head of state? Can French socialists unite behind her? What will be the key issues in the election next year? Send us your comments and opinions.
