Israeli planes stage mock raids over Hezbollah strongholds
Posted on Tuesday, October 31, 2006

Source: Associated Press / Via: What Really Happened

BEIRUT — Israeli fighter jets staged mock raids over Hezbollah strongholds in Beirut and two southern towns on Tuesday in the heaviest show of air power over Lebanon since an August ceasefire ended the war between Israel and the guerrillas.

The warplanes dived low over Beirut's southern suburbs at least six times before roaring back into the sky, Lebanese security officials said.

In south Lebanon, officials...

Israel has acknowledged for the first time that it attacked Hezbollah targets during the second Lebanon war with phosphorus shells. White phosphorus causes very painful and often lethal chemical burns to those hit by it, and until recently Israel maintained that it only uses...

Sentiment d'échec en Israël

Philippe Leymarie

Iran mulled nuclear bomb in 1988
By Frances Harrison
BBC News, Tehran

A letter from 1988 in which Iran's top commander says Iran could need a nuclear bomb to win the war against Iraq has come to light in Tehran.

The commander is quoted in the letter, written by the father of the Iranian revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini, to top officials in the final days of the war.

It has only now been made public - by former President Hashemi Rafsanjani.

The letter seems at odds with Tehran's statements that Iran is not seeking a bomb because it is against Islam.

Mistakes made in Iraq, says Straw
Former Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has described the current situation in Iraq as "dire".

Mr Straw, who held the job at the time the UK decided to take part in the 2003 war, said there were things he regretted about the campaign.

Speaking on BBC One's Question Time, he said "mistakes" were made by the US following the invasion.

He said State Department efforts to ensure there was a "proper civilian administration" were not acted on.

"The current situation is dire," he said.

'Million bomblets' in S Lebanon
Up to a million cluster bomblets discharged by Israel in its conflict with Hezbollah remain unexploded in southern Lebanon, the UN has said.

The UN's mine disposal agency says about 40% of the cluster bombs fired or dropped by Israel failed to detonate - three times the UN's previous estimate.

It says the problem could delay the return home of about 200,000 displaced people by up to two years.

The devices have killed 14 people in south Lebanon since the August truce.

The manager of the UN's mine removal centre in south...

Iran's proud but discreet Jews
By Frances Harrison
BBC News, Tehran

Although Iran and Israel are bitter enemies, few know that Iran is home to the largest number of Jews anywhere in the Middle East outside Israel.

About 25,000 Jews live in Iran and most are determined to remain no matter what the pressures - as proud of their Iranian culture as of their Jewish roots.

It is dawn in the Yusufabad synagogue in Tehran and Iranian Jews bring out the Torah and read the ancient text before making their way to work.

It is not a sight you would expect...

Lebanon's president castigates UN
Lebanon's President Emile Lahoud has lambasted the UN for failing to stop "barbarous aggression" by Israel in the recent conflict.

Mr Lahoud criticised the UN for allowing itself to be "subjected to the vagaries of a few world powers".

He said Lebanon reserved the right to take Israel to an international court to demand compensation for damages.

Mr Lahoud told the General Assembly Lebanon had been subjected to "a rarely seen campaign of savage dismemberment".

The United States threatened to bomb Pakistan "back to the stone age" unless it joined the fight against al-Qaeda, President Pervez Musharraf says.

General Musharraf said the warning was delivered by former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage to Pakistan's intelligence director.

Pakistan agreed to side with the US, but Gen Musharraf said it did so based on his country's national interest.

Uncovering Iran's ancient past
When the BBC's Zahid Warley arrived in Iran for a special Radio 4 programme, it was not his first visit - that was in the 70s when Tehran was a stop-off on the hippy trail.

The images that surface from that first visit are fragmentary but vivid: the deep red of the pomegranate juice served to us from a bucket by a street vendor; the fresh laundry smell of the steamed rice and kebabs that we ate pretty well every day, and a truly hallucinatory hotel where, as we were waiting to check in, I turned and saw - or thought I saw - a goat munching sugar from...

Israel 'trains Iraqi Kurd forces'
By Magdi Abdelhadi
Arab affairs analyst, BBC News

The BBC has obtained evidence that Israelis have been giving military training to Kurds in northern Iraq.

A report on the BBC TV programme Newsnight showed Israeli experts in Kurdish areas of north Iraq, drilling soldiers in shooting techniques.

Kurdish officials have refused to comment on the report and Israel has denied it knows of any involvement.

The revelation is set to cause enormous problems for the Kurds, not only in Iraq but also in the wider region.

Iran's growing regional influence

By John Simpson
World affairs editor, BBC News

Iran is now a regional superpower, and ever since the Islamic revolution in 1978-9, we in the West have consistently misunderstood it.

On 9 January 1979, a couple of weeks before his triumphant return to Iran, I interviewed Ayatollah Khomeini at his base in exile outside Paris.

In the interview, Khomeini sketched out Iran's entire future: the eradication of the monarchy, universal suffrage and the ban on "corrupt" Western influences.

And he outlined...

Annan faces tough Tehran tasks
By Jonathan Marcus
BBC diplomatic correspondent

For the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan all roads now lead to Tehran.

Iran is after all a central player in two of the continuing dramas in the Middle East - the crisis in Lebanon and the continuing war of wills over Tehran's own nuclear programme.

Iran is also a minor player in the crisis afflicting the Palestinians.

But more significantly Iran is the inspiration behind a rising tide of Shia self-confidence in the region.

And as a would-be regional power...

Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the protection of civilian persons in time of war states:

Donors looking to rebuild Lebanon
By Bill Wilson
Business reporter, BBC News

More than 60 nations and organisations are to meet in Stockholm to raise $500m (£263m; 392m euros) to rebuild Lebanon, damaged by 34 days of conflict.

The one-day meeting on Thursday is the first donors' conference to be held since the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel broke out in July.

The European Commission has pledged 42m euros ahead of the conference.

The UN says access to medical care, key roads and bridges, opening markets, and removal of bombs are key priorities.

L’image est souvent l’information la plus difficile à maîtriser dans un conflit comme celui du Liban car c’est souvent le principal vecteur de l’émotion. Israeli views on Shebaa Farms harden
By Raffi Berg
BBC News, Golan Heights
